Holding on to the Rainbow

Last night as I folded O’s rainbow shirt, my husband asked me “How long do you think he’ll be able to get away with the rainbow?”. O is 6.  He loves bright colors, interesting textures, things that sparkle, things that glow in the dark and animals.  Have you ever noticed that glow-in-the-dark is the boy version of sparkle?  O is extremely jealous of his sister’s twirly skirts, but he’s pretty much limited to his 3 glow shirts and one rainbow shirt.  He used to enjoy bowties, but we haven’t watched Matt Smith as Dr. Who lately.  He’s been socialized out of pink as a favorite color at school.

I hope he always has rainbows.  I feel confident he’ll be okay for another year. After that he will change to the middle school where he won’t be the kid who has been wearing a rainbow shirt since day one.  We’ll see how that goes.  I hope, he will always love rainbows.
